The purpose of this wordy slide is:
  • To set some objectives for the presentations
  • To give an overview of what is likely to follow
  • To provide some indication of outcomes that those who complete the module successfully can expect to use as takeaway in their own work and organisation.

This slide provides information about my own background (or a reminder for students who have met me before).
I worked in the world of teaching English as a Foreign Language for nearly 20 years:
  • Sweden for two years, mainly teaching pharmacists
  • Kuwait for three years, mainly teaching fire service personnel
  • Libya for four years, managing a language school with 25 staff and 1,300 part-time adult students from 45 different nationalities.
I have worked for the Open University as well as the University of Ulster: and I have an interest in online learning, including more recently my enthusiasm for MOOCs.
Optional: The benefits of learning a foreign language

The purpose of this slide is to provide a context for the approach I adopt in dealing with the module content, with a focus on issues around innovation and some links to other functional areas of management.

As we move towards the final set of slides I remind you of the Marketing Mentor resource that is available for all students of the University. Look in particular for resources that deal with entrepreneurship, business start-up and business planning.

As we move into this section I make mention of the companion resources that have been made available at the website mentioned on this slide.

As a brief aside, I also commend to the class the value of making interesting use of such free resources as www.weebly.com in some of the communication activities that they themselves are required or expected to provide in their own organisation.

Sister Celine McArdle of Castlebllayney died recently.

In memory of her and her ability to think innovatively about opportunities for new ideas and new projects that would bring benefits to the local community, I make mention of the creation of the Iontas Centre in the town.

Much of this creativity and innovation came from her ability to scan the environment and identify significant needs within different groups locally.
