Etienne Wenger, who spoke at the University of Ulster in September 2011, has published extensively on the idea of communities of practice. He summarises Communities of Practice (CoP) as “groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.” This learning that takes place is not necessarily intentional. Three components are required in order to be a CoP:

Sermo is an example of a community of practice; it is for 200,000 American doctors, "where physicians across all 50 states representing 68 specialties come to network, discuss treatment options, and curbside peers for expert advice whenever they need it."

BESIG Is a community community of practice for teachers of business English; it is a special interest group of IATEFL.
I have been a member of BESIG for a number of years and value the opportunity to network online, attend webinars, etc. I regard this as part of my own continuing professional development.
There are, of course, opportunities to meet face-to-face with people whom I have got to know through BESIG.

I used to think that my barber had little or no opportunities to be innovative in the work that he does; but examples are emerging of how barbers are able to get some significant benefit from creating and using online resources and selling a range of products online.
Jason Shankey, in Ballyhackamore in Belfast, has made a considerable success of his business with his sophisticated website.

Captain Phillips, a recent films starring Tom Hanks, tells the story of a huge container ship that is taken over by Somali pirates off the coast of East Africa. The early scenes, in particular, draw attention to the importance of containerisation in the world economy.
Malcolm McLean, who had the original idea for containers, had a background in the road transport industry and went on to develop his ideas through the 1950s. Containers brought significant and disruptive change to logistics, as ports round the world adopted his technologies and moved away from the use of stevedores whom had manually loaded and unloaded ships in previous decades.

Michael O’Leary of RyanAir is easily recognised as a rather erinaceous and difficult individual; he can be very challenging and gives the impression of being very demanding to work for. That said, he has been involved in the changing of business models used in the airline industry and some related sectors and we all appreciate the change to lower-cost, no frills airlines for either recreational or work travel.
Cheap flights provides some indication of how an (unnamed) low cost airline thinks creatively about setting its prices.

Atul Gawande, inspired by simple checklists used in the airline industry, has been changing the operating procedures used in surgery.
The Checklist Manifesto describes his ideas and shows how they can be applied in a range of different working environments. His 19-item checklist is available online.

3D printing may have the potential to disrupt the manufacturing processes that have been used in many industries in the past.
There may be particular value in the ability it has to create rapid prototypes of initial ideas before full-scale manufacturing begins and in the creation of high-value, one-off products.
